Dear Natural Trail Supporters
The City of Bloomington has announced a hearing for the City Council to vote on their Minnesota River Valley Strategic Plan (MRVSP). Announcement of that hearing can be found here: http://bit.ly/1YM4Tdx.
The MRVSP includes language for a two-trail system through the Minnesota River Valley from the Bloomington Ferry Bridge to the Minnesota Wildlife Refuge Headquarters and eventually on to Fort Snelling. One paved trail and one single-track trail, all likely in the same 100’ wide clear-cut corridor. Envision thousands of trees uprooted and destroyed underneath the tread of heavy equipment. Contemplate a beautiful, natural and wild area destroyed in the name of “progress”. Not to mention that bituminous material (pavement) is also toxic and polluting. There is no guarantee the US Fish and Wildlife will allow two trails. Clearly the focus will be on the paved trail not the current and popular trail that exists now. Details on the plan itself: http://bit.ly/1OKgnti .
If you put yourself squarely on the side of keeping the Minnesota River Trail in its current wonderful, wild and natural state but with some improvements like bridges, culverts and restrooms, the time to act is NOW!
Step 1: The City of Bloomington has asked for your input. You need to give it too them. Especially Bloomington residents who may have to pick up parts of the bill to maintain a unsustainable paved trail in a FLOOD PLAIN!
Please email the Bloominton City Council. Politely and respectfully tell them that a paved trail down a 100’ clear-cut corridor in a flood plain at the cost of millions of dollars is a horribly irresponsible plan and should be voted down.
Step 2: Come to the hearing. Whether you are a cyclist, runner, hiker, birder or nature lover, you need to be there. Bloomington residents we will need you to stand up and give your opinion at this meeting.
Thursday, December 17, 2015 at 6:05 p.m., City Council Chambers – Bloomington City Hall, 1800 West Old Shakopee Road
It is vitally important that we fill the room with supporters of the #savetheriverbottoms effort but even more so that EVERY Bloomington resident that supports this effort show up and speak up against this plan. Tell them you want to see a user study, an environmental impact study and ask who is going to maintain it and how they plan on paying for that maintenance.
Please email or call. Please put the date on the calendar and be there. Speak up in opposition to politics as usual. Share this message. (If via Facebook, click on “Share” then “Copy Link” and paste into a new Facebook post to ensure you share the entire message). Tell your friends, family and co-workers that the people can prevail but we need to bring many together to make one extremely loud voice.
